first full day in penang!

I looooove Penang! We woke up late and showered and then went for breakfast where the hostel owner suggested. It was a street food style place not far from the hostel and we had such a delicious breakfast!! it sounds a bit bizarre but it was like soft boiled eggs in a cup with buttery roti bread cut into squares to dip in. It was really, really nice and we had a sweet Indian tea drink with it. It cost us less than £1 each.

Next we caught the free bus which goes around the centre of the city and then another one for 40p in order to get to Penang hill. Originally i'd wanted to climb it but when seeing quite how high it was I was suddenly relieved to see the train that took you up! We paid £6 each to be taken up to the top, around 700m above sea level. The views were very impressive though this wasn't very obvious from my photos (I took the wrong lens with me) but it was incredible to see.

After a look round we got some good at the little restaurant, and then wandered around the top a bit. People were going amazing charaicture drawings for £3 so I got one done (it can replace the portrait of 9 year old me in the dining room). And then we caught the train back down and then the bus back to near our hostel.

We stayed in for a bit then ventured out for some dinner. We walked to a Sikh festival going on and then went to an Indian restaurant (surprise surprise) which was delicious. After that we spent a couple of hours watching  bhangra dancing and various performances (including a horrible one involving people swallowing flames, cracking coconuts over people's beads etc). At 10ish we walked back.

Some new guests had arrived and so the hostel owner was taking them out for drinks and invited us. We went to the same place as the night before and met a Belgian girl, a French girl and an English couple. It was so fun to exchange travelling stories as everyone had such dramatic ones and it was a really fun night. We got back around 1.30 exhausted and ready to sleep!
