Another day in Singapore. Today we headed off to Maxwell Food Centre, recommended by my friend, one of the hawker places to eat. Food is really cheap and I had a fish noodle dish for $3.50 (£1.75) and a mango, pineapple and lemon juice for £1.50. It was really busy with local families having lunch together. It's located right in Chinatown where our uber driver suggested visiting, and we wandered around. There was a great street market where we picked up some souvenirs, and then stopped at a henna stand. I'm not very good at turning down people selling stuff and the man insisted a henna would look great down my back. $8 later it was pretty impressive to be fair, and he did a flower on Molly and then gave lauren a free one.
We continued exploring the local area, and spent a solid 1 hour attempting to find tampons. Honestly I'm starting to doubt that Asian women have periods because any kind of sanitary protection has been almost impossible to track down, and when we did eventually find them they only sell one type; the same size, brand etc each time. Conveniently placed by a rack of maybe 30 varieties of condoms, obviously much harder to refrain from than bleeding each month. Apologies if this was TMI but also this is a weird and real thing/stigma happening in the modern world. Crazy. Amidst this search we did see a very nice Hindu temple however.
Finally successful we got the subway to marina bay. It was so clean and spacious compared to the English ones. We arrived in a massive shopping centre with really upmarket shops like Gucci and chanel, only just outside our price range obviously. We spent a while testing different make up samples in the shops and I bought a massive salad in a health food shop. We wandered around for ages trying to track down where the water and light show was, and eventually discovered that we were very close to it. We'd been told the show was 7.30 and by now it was around 5.30 so we sat in a cafe and had a drink (when diet coke is $6 we can only afford one each) and used the free wifi to skype and then I booked my place on a volunteering programme in india and one of my flights. Exciting stuff!
At 7.30 we wandered forward to where the show was. It turned out not to be until 8 and I moved to one side to get a better view for photos. It was very pretty as they used the lights to animate photos into the water fountains.
Next we tried to get an uber back but there was a date surcharge so we decided to get a bus instead. After some confusion (thanks Google maps) we tracked it down and it conveniently went right by our hostel. We had to move dorms which took sufficient effort but tired us our before bed.
